Cast of Spirits

Baron Samedi

Baron Samedi is the Loa of death and King of the Ghede family of Voodoo spirits. Because he is the ruler of the dead, he loves to taste life and make deals. He favors tobacco, rum, women, profanity, and all forms of mortal debauchery. The Baron is also the Loa of black magic and has power over life and death.

Grandma Dede

Sanite Dede came from Saint Domingue as a free woman and was famous for her love and sex charms, and her power of hexing. She is the earliest recorded High Priestess, or Voodoo Queen, of New Orleans, and had great power and influence until the 1820s. Owing to a deal with Maman Brigitte, her Voodoo is still powerful today.

Maman Brigitte

As Loa, Maman Brigitte is the feminine personification of death. She is the guardian of graves and consort to Baron Samedi. She is also called upon for healing and to punish the wicked. Maman Brigitte comes to Voodoo from the Celtic tradition of Brigid, brought to Saint Domingue by Irish indentured servants. Her Loa incarnation is only a few hundred years old, but her manifestation as the three-fold Celtic goddess is as ancient as the earth.

Storm Loa: Agau, Bade, Sogbo

Represented by this veve, Agau is the Loa of storms. He controls thunder, lightning, wind, and rain. Powerful and violent, he is respected and feared by all. He speaks with thunder and personifies the rage of the storm. He is often accompanied by Bade and Sogbo, the inseparable loa of wind and lightning. Together they bring the hurricane.

Marassa

Marassa are the divine twins and personify the contrast between divinity and humanity. They symbolize the elemental forces of the universe. All twins share the Loa essence of Marassa and therefore, are much closer to the Spirit than the single-souled.
